As most people are chomping down on their chocolate bunnies, sweet pink Peeps, and candied calories, Easter for others is a time of reflection, hope and reminder of what Christ has done for us. In the simplest conversations with my 3 and 5 year old nephews, I was reminded of God’s immense love for us and the purpose behind Easter. We at Gospel Village hope that this Easter was a time you could reflect on God’s Love for you, and how He gave His son just for you.

I wanted to ask our very own, Agapito Avila to expound upon Easter and why–if we view it as “just another holiday”–why it is so important as Believers.

What does Easter mean as Christians?

For Christians Easter is more than a religious tradition. Easter points to the love, grace, mercy, justice and glory of God the Father that was revealed through God the Son who was resurrected by the power of the Holy Spirit (Romans 1:1-5). Easter points us to the justice of God and the gift of our justification. In Romans 4:24-25, Saint Paul established the following truth; “…Him who raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead, who was delivered up because of our offenses, and was raised because of our justification.” Here Paul reveals that with the death of the Son of God, our offenses were forgiven and with his resurrection we were made righteous. Christ resurrected for our justification. This is the great news of Easter. His resurrection confirmed and established our justification and because we are now justified in the sight of the Father, who was once in anger towards us, he is now at peace with us and we also have gained access by faith into his awesome grace. “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” (Romans 5:1) Easter is a celebration of worship towards our great, faithful and merciful Savior.

In general, how does Easter change everything?

The work of redemption through Jesus Christ changed the human history once and for all. The cross brought reconciliation between God and man. The cross gave us eternal hope and brought the peace that passes all understanding to our hearts. The cross opened the gate of heaven so that we can, now and forever, have access to the knowledge of the Holy one, which is the greatest reward of our salvation. The work of redemption changes every aspect of our lives weather it be faith, hope, peace, love, good works, marriage, family…in all things!! The cross brought us back to our EDEN (Christ) and gave us eternal hope.

What are some key verses we could highlight for Easter?

1 Corinthians 1:18 Christ The Wisdom and Power of God “For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”

1 Corinthians 15:16-17 “For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins.”

Galatians 2:20-21 “ I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.”

Galatians 6:14 “But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.”
